pleats, bows, and puffed sleeves - oh my!

it's rare that i remember to take a 'before' picture when i'm altering a thrift store dress; i usually get too excited to start altering it and just rip into the garment. i'm going to do things a bit backwards here and show you the 'after' picture first. without further ado, meet my latest project!
dress: vintage, altered
belt: forever21
shoes: cynthia vincent

and for the 'before' picture...
shudder. it was an XXXL choir robe-ish dress, with giant shoulder pads, the frumpiest neckline, and possibly the worst sleeves ever. i first took the white panel in the bodice apart and cut it much shorter. i made the sleeves shorter, took the bottom hem up, and made the overall dress smaller. i'm by no means an experienced sewer - i just kind of haphazardly do things as i go along, and have sort of learned by trial and error over the years - but i think it looks alright.

if you guys are interested, i'll try to take more 'before' pictures as i alter things, though i may have to find a different area of the house in which to take them (maybe i'll even set up my tripod). i still can't believe i posted of picture of my bathroom.

I would love to see more before and after photos. I find it really inspiring and it gives me the courage to try projects I would normally find daunting.

For example, I would have passed over this dress in a thrift store because the potential would have been lost on me, but next time I'll keep a more open minded since I've seen what you've been able to get out of it!

You're so good at taking ugly things and making them so so cute. I really like the way your dress turned out. Super adorable.

I would definitely like to see more befores and afters. Perhaps it will give me some inspiration to try a bit of altering. =)

I love the before and after pictures!! I think that is such a great idea. I have a vintage store as well and we are constantly on the sewing machine modernizing our dresses. Our customer don't really understand the work that goes into the dresses we sell. Sharing before and after pictures is such a wonderful idea. Love this post! happy weekend!

Oh my gosh I can't believe what that dress used to look like! I like how you put the after pictures up first, it made the before picture that much more dramatic.

I really admire your sewing skills. I wish i have the time to learn how. I have tons of real vintage dresses needing to be altered and it costs an arm and a leg to have them done professionally here. I actually order my vintage stuff from ebay because it's hard to find vintage dresses in thrift stores here. They have mostly are thrifted items from US and Korea. Please do post before pictures, it inspires me.

The dress is so pretty!!! I mean the altered version not the original ;) But I love seeing the before picture because nothing could illustrate so well how you have to look past all the things that are wrong with a garment but can be changed and pick out the details like the white v-neck and bow with potential that make it worth altering.

The finished result looks like such a perfectly preserved vintage piece that I would never have imagined it started life like that.

before/after pictures are good, because they make me feel better about trying alterations on my own! i recently did my first alteration on a vintage dress but it was simple, just shortening sleeves. a step by step occasionally might be cool to see too!

I am utterly amazed by your ability to see potential in items! I love the idea of before and after, because in this case, I would never have dreamed such a cute little dress could come from such a monstrosity of an original.

Your eye for a cute dress lurking within a frumpy find is super-impressive.
